About the event

Join us on Thursday, August 29th for the next Korean-American Professionals of Oregon networking event. Meet other Korean-Americans and supporters of the Korean-American community at this informal meet up hosted by Chef Koo of Warsugai, one of Eater PDX's "Hottest New Restaurants in Portland."

Warsugai opened its doors in Southeast Portland on January 31st, inviting guests to rediscover nostalgic Asian-American dishes through Chef/Owner Kyo Koo’s innovative culinary lens. A first generation Korean American born and raised in Portland, OR, Chef Koo has over two decades of experience in fine dining, including a stint at Spain's renowned Mugaritz, and his talents have been showcased on platforms like The Food Network's Chopped, where he emerged victorious. His first independent restaurant concept is focused on elevated interpretations of classic Asian American dishes, carefully sourced ingredients and a complimentary beverage program featuring craft sake, Asian-inspired cocktails, beer and food-friendly wines.

Warsugai is more than just a restaurant for Chef Koo, it's a tribute to his family's legacy and the vibrant culinary scene of Portland. His grandmother worked for the CIA as a translator during the war in South Korea, speaking five languages and supporting communications for the military alongside Koo’s grandfather, who also served in the military and worked with the US Army. The couple was given preferable immigration status by the US government and eventually settled down in Portland, where they opened the city’s first Korean grocery store and were founding members of the city’s first Korean church. Coincidentally Warsugai is located in a neighborhood familiar to Chef Koo -- his parents had a tofu factory across the street decades ago.

Chef Koo draws inspiration from his upbringing, which revolved around Korean cuisine at home and cherished family outings to iconic Portland-area restaurants such as Shanghai Noble House, Chen’s Dynasty, and Lin's China Jade. These cherished memories serve as the driving force behind Warsugai, where Koo infuses classic dishes with his own creative twist, each serving as a heartfelt homage to the flavors that have shaped his culinary journey. Whether you're indulging in a beloved childhood favorite or discovering a new culinary delight, Warsugai promises an unforgettable dining experience that connects you to your past while creating new memories in a space that feels like home.
